The latest information reveals that FIFA has ruled in favor of Tunisia in the dispute over its elimination from the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Following Tunisia’s 0-1 defeat to Cape Verde last weekend, the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) contested the result, arguing that Cape Verde fielded Fernando Varela, who was suspended for four matches after receiving a red card for unsportsmanlike conduct.
FIFA has now confirmed that Cape Verde used the ineligible player, and as a result, Tunisia advances to the play-offs. Cape Verde has been eliminated and faces a fine of 6,000 Swiss francs. This decision also affects the seeding for the play-offs, with Egypt likely to be among the top seeds. The draw for the play-offs is scheduled for September 16.
