In the lead-up to the prestigious FIFA World Cup in Brazil, airlines have seized the opportunity to capitalize on the event. However, the consumer protection body of the State of Rio de Janeiro has raised concerns about five local companies that significantly raised ticket prices as the competition approaches.
The consumer protection organization reported cases where ticket prices were increased by up to 1000% compared to normal days, with the most substantial increases observed on popular routes such as Rio-Sao Paulo.
As the opening match of the World Cup is scheduled for June 12, 2014, with 32 countries participating in the competition, the airline price hikes have become a matter of scrutiny. The final draw for the tournament is set for December 6, 2013.
