Claude Makelele names Kylian Mbappe as modern-day Ronaldo Nazario successor
Former Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele believes Kylian Mbappe has emerged as the closest player to carrying the legacy of Brazilian great Ronaldo Nazario, backing the France captain to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
The French football legend has been impressed by Mbappe’s influence on the biggest stages, arguing that the Real Madrid forward’s individual brilliance has strengthened his claim for football’s most prestigious individual award despite a relatively modest trophy haul at club level this season.
Makelele insists Mbappe’s consistency, match-winning ability and impact for both Real Madrid and France separate him from the competition as he continues to dominate world football.
“I’d love for Mbappé to win it,” Makelele told Marca. “He hasn’t picked up many trophies with Real Madrid this season, but what he’s producing at this World Cup is exceptional.
Mbappe’s World Cup displays strengthen Ballon d’Or case
While Real Madrid have endured a challenging campaign in terms of team success, Mbappe’s personal numbers and performances have remained at an elite level.
The 27-year-old has continued to deliver in crucial moments, with his ability to decide major matches reinforcing his status among the world’s best players.
For Makelele, collective honours should not overshadow the level of excellence Mbappe has displayed throughout the season, especially with the forward once again leading France’s challenge on the global stage.
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid star believes Mbappe’s continued evolution has brought him closer to the standards set by Ronaldo Nazario, one of football’s most celebrated forwards.
“Kylian Mbappe’s relentless consistency season after season is drawing him closer and closer to Ronaldo Nazario.
‘The closest thing we have seen to R9’
Ronaldo Nazario, famously nicknamed “O Fenomeno”, is widely regarded as one of the most naturally gifted players in football history, combining explosive pace, technical brilliance and remarkable finishing.
Makelele believes Mbappe possesses similar qualities, highlighting the Frenchman’s ability to create moments of magic while maintaining extraordinary consistency at the highest level.
“We didn’t call the Brazilian ‘O Fenomeno’ for nothing, and Mbappe is undoubtedly the phenomenon of his own generation.
“The frightening part is that he still has levels to reach. I am absolutely convinced: he is the closest thing we have seen to a modern-day R9.”
Mbappe’s pursuit of the Ballon d’Or comes after years of near misses, having repeatedly featured among the finalists but yet to claim the award.
