Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi: Derby County eye move for Nigerian OH Leuven striker

Derby County are exploring a move for Nigerian centre-forward Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi from Belgian side OH Leuven as they look to strengthen their attacking options for the Championship campaign.

The 24-year-old, who stands at 1.95m and operates through the middle, only joined OH Leuven in July 2024 from Italian club Salernitana. He is under contract with the Jupiler Pro League side until 30 June 2027, meaning Derby would need to negotiate a fee to prise him away from Belgium. His current valuation is around €1.2 million, giving an indication of the level of investment that may be required.

Ikwuemesi moved to Leuven after a single season in Serie A with Salernitana, where he arrived in August 2023 from Slovenian outfit NK Celje in a deal worth €1.8 million. That transfer came on the back of his emergence in Slovenia following earlier spells with NK Krsko and Austrian side Vorwarts Steyr.

A right-footed striker, Ikwuemesi has built a reputation in recent seasons as a traditional centre-forward presence, and his profile has attracted interest from clubs seeking additional physicality at the top end of the pitch.

Leuven, who paid €1.8 million to sign him from Salernitana, are under no pressure to sell given the length of his current deal. Derby’s interest is at an early stage, and any formal move is likely to hinge on whether the Belgian club are prepared to cash in on a player tied down for another year beyond the current season.
