Christopher Katongo Dropped from Zambia Squad Ahead of Crucial CAN 2015 Qualifier
Veteran forward and former captain Christopher Katongo has been excluded from Zambia’s training camp by national team coach Honor Janza, in a move aimed at maintaining squad harmony ahead of the next 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger.
The decision was confirmed on Monday via a statement on the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) official website. According to the statement, Janza’s priority is to preserve unity and focus in the squad:
“This is to ward off any negative energy that might be released by the unselected players.”
Katongo, who famously captained Zambia to its historic 2012 AFCON title, has seen his form and influence decline. His omission comes amid growing local speculation about a potential retirement from international football.
Coach Janza has trimmed the squad to 18 players for the home match against Niger, with several players—including Katongo—asked to return home.
Zambia currently sits in a difficult position in the group standings with only two points from three matches, following draws against Mozambique and Niger. Group leaders Cape Verde have a comfortable lead with six points.
