Christian Kofane’s future at Bayer Leverkusen has become uncertain after talks over a contract extension stalled, according to his agent Eric Depolo.
Discussions had been under way, as previously reported exclusively by Africafoot, but have now reached a standstill. Speaking to the Daily Arsenal, Depolo suggested that a move to the Premier League could ultimately prove the best outcome for all parties.
The Cameroon striker, who is only 20, remains a target for a number of English clubs. Several Premier League sides explored a possible transfer during the last summer window, although no deal was completed and Kofane stayed with Bayer Leverkusen.
Leverkusen rejected three €70m offers
Bayer Leverkusen have shown that they place a high value on their young forward and were not prepared to sell him easily.
Depolo said the German club had rejected offers worth about €70m from three Premier League teams: Aston Villa, Everton and Newcastle.
Those decisions underlined Leverkusen’s determination to retain Kofane. However, with negotiations over a new contract now frozen, his position could change during the coming months.
Kofane has continued to attract attention in England as his profile has grown. The failure to reach an agreement over an extension is likely to increase speculation over whether he will remain at the club beyond the next transfer window.
Arsenal monitoring the situation
Arsenal have been following Kofane for some time and have maintained contact with his representatives. The Gunners remain informed about the latest developments, with the Cameroon international regarded as a player with significant long-term potential.
However, Arsenal believe an intermediate move could be beneficial before he joins a club competing regularly near the top of the Premier League.
The plan would be for Kofane to continue developing at a less exposed Premier League club before taking the next step at Arsenal. That approach would allow him to gain further experience in England while reducing the immediate pressure associated with joining a leading side.
Manchester United also interested
Arsenal are not the only major English club keeping track of Kofane’s circumstances. Manchester United have also shown interest in the striker.
Depolo confirmed that the Red Devils admire the player, but said Manchester United had not yet contacted him about a potential transfer.
With negotiations at Bayer Leverkusen currently at a standstill, Kofane could become one of the key transfer stories to follow in the next window. Arsenal, Manchester United and several other Premier League clubs are understood to be attracted by his profile, raising the possibility of a move to England in the coming months.
Bayer Leverkusen are due to face Mainz in their fifth matchday fixture in the German league. The listed odds are 2.17 for a Bayer Leverkusen win, 4.00 for a draw and 2.87 for a Mainz victory.
