Algeria Faces Qatar in First Friendly Since 2015 AFCON, Prepares for 2017 CAN Qualifiers
The Algerian national team, the Fennecs, are set to play a friendly match against Qatar today, marking their first outing since the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea. Under coach Christian Gourcuff, Algeria will also face Oman three days later in a second friendly.
This Gulf tour is a key part of Algeria’s preparation for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the 2018 World Cup campaign. Gourcuff plans to use these matches both to test new players and to improve the team’s coordination across defense, midfield, and attack.
“The match against Qatar is very important for us, as is the one against Oman. They will serve as preparation for the 2017 CAN qualifiers which will start next June. We must take advantage of this training camp to work harder and correct our mistakes. We must remain serious,” Gourcuff told beIN Sports.
Algeria aims to build momentum and sharpen its squad in these friendlies to ensure a strong start to its upcoming qualification campaigns.
