Choupo-Moting set to join New York Red Bulls in MLS move

Choupo-Moting set to join New York Red Bulls in MLS move

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is poised to resume his football career with a move to Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls. The 35-year-old Cameroonian striker, who has been without a club since leaving Bayern Munich on July 1, has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract beginning January 2025.

Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg confirmed the deal, stating that all parties have reached an agreement and that Choupo-Moting has successfully completed his medical examination.

The move marks a new chapter for the player, who will join a fresh footballing environment after a career largely spent in Germany, with notable stints at Stoke City in England and Paris Saint-Germain in France.

This signing represents the eighth club of Choupo-Moting’s professional career. Despite his absence from Cameroon’s national team since June, the transfer could pave the way for a return to the international stage.

With 73 caps and 20 goals to his name, the forward was briefly recalled under coach Marc Brys earlier this year but did not see any playing time. Previously, he had been sidelined under former national coach Rigobert Song.

At New York Red Bulls, Choupo-Moting will join fellow African players Mohammed Sofo and Ronald Donkor, who are currently the only other African representatives in the squad.

The team recently secured a seventh-place finish in the Eastern Conference and is keen to bolster its attacking options ahead of the next campaign.

For Choupo-Moting, this transition offers not only the chance to rediscover form but also to experience football in a new cultural and competitive setting.

With his proven ability and experience at top European clubs, the striker will be expected to contribute significantly to his new team and potentially reignite his national team prospects.

The Cameroonian veteran’s arrival could signal an increased focus on international talent within MLS, a league that continues to attract players seeking new opportunities later in their careers.

As fans await his debut, all eyes will be on how this seasoned forward adapts to his new surroundings.
