Chiefs weigh fitness risk as Tanzanian midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa arrives after long injury lay-off

Kaizer Chiefs face an immediate decision over how quickly to throw new signing Adolf Mtasingwa into action, with the Tanzanian midfielder arriving at Naturena on the back of a lengthy injury absence.

The 27-year-old defensive midfielder, full name Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko, was unveiled on Tuesday after completing a move from Tanzanian giants Azam FC for an undisclosed fee. His signing is notable in club history, as he becomes the first player from Tanzania to represent the Soweto side in their iconic gold and black colours.

However, while his arrival bolsters Fernando Da Cruz’s midfield options, Chiefs’ technical team must weigh up the risks around his match fitness and physical resilience. Mtasingwa was sidelined for around nine to ten months with a serious injury and only returned to competitive football in January 2026.

Following that long rehabilitation period, the former Azam captain featured just six times for the Dar es Salaam club before sealing his switch to South Africa. That limited game-time, combined with the extended spell on the treatment table, has prompted inevitable doubts over his durability at Premier Soccer League level.

Fitness concern shapes selection calls

The central issue facing Chiefs management is whether Mtasingwa’s recent history points to him being vulnerable to further injuries, and if so, whether the club may still need to recruit another midfielder before the window closes.

Da Cruz already has several options in the middle of the park, with Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Siphesiphle Ndlovu and Samkelo Zwane all competing for starts in central areas. The coach will have to strike a balance between integrating his new signing and maintaining continuity in a key part of the pitch.

Squad depth is also under pressure. Chiefs are at risk of losing Thabo Cele, while George Matlou has recently departed the club, trimming the pool of established midfielders available to the French coach.

Against that backdrop, Mtasingwa is expected to play a significant role if he can prove his fitness and adapt quickly to South African football. How carefully Chiefs manage his workload in the early weeks of the season is likely to be crucial.

Debut spotlight in Toyota Cup

Mtasingwa could be tested sooner rather than later, with his first outing in Amakhosi colours anticipated as early as this weekend. He is expected to make his debut in the high-profile Toyota Cup clash against Scottland FC.

That match would offer supporters a first proper look at the Tanzanian international and give the coaching staff a clearer picture of his sharpness after such a disrupted year. It will also be an early indication of whether he can shoulder the physical demands of Chiefs’ campaign following his extended absence.

For now, the club’s major question remains: can Mtasingwa stay fit long enough to become a mainstay in Da Cruz’s midfield, or will Amakhosi be forced back into the market in search of additional reinforcement in the centre of the pitch?
