Chiefs rue missed chances after Golden Arrows draw

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Dillon Sheppard believes his side should have taken all three points from their goalless draw with Golden Arrows at Mbombela Stadium.

The 0-0 stalemate extended a difficult run for Amakhosi, who have collected just one point in four of their past five matches. The result also left Fernando Da Cruz’s team fourth in the Betway Premiership, behind third-placed AmaZulu.

Chiefs had an opportunity to secure victory when midfielder Lebohang Maboe stepped up from the penalty spot, but his effort was saved. Sheppard said the missed chance contributed to a result that left his side frustrated, although he accepted that Golden Arrows had also threatened.

“It was a fair result. They had a couple of chances, especially near the end, but overall, I think we deserved to win it if you look at the balance of the chances,” Sheppard told the club’s official website.

The assistant coach said Chiefs had shown enough quality in the attacking areas but needed to be more effective when opportunities arrived.

“We have been getting into the final third, which is where the action happens near the opposition box. Our creativity has been good; it’s just a matter of sticking our chances away,” he said.

Sheppard added that the team’s ability to create openings remained an encouraging aspect of their performances, despite their lack of points in recent matches.

“The good thing is that we are creating chances. That’s a positive so we just have to carry on with that.”

Chiefs’ latest draw was their fourth in their past five matches, increasing the pressure on Da Cruz’s side to turn promising attacking play into victories.

They will have an opportunity to respond when they return to Betway Premiership action against Stellenbosch FC on Saturday, 17th of October. The match will be played at FNB Stadium.
