Cherki Fuels Algeria speculation with cryptic response amid national team uncertainty

Rayan Cherki has reignited debate over his international future after offering a cryptic response when asked about the possibility of representing Algeria, sending social media and supporters into a frenzy.

Following his dramatic injury-time equaliser for Lyon against Lille in a 2-2 Ligue 1 thriller, the Franco-Algerian midfielder was interviewed by beIN Sports MENA, where his brief but intriguing remarks sparked fresh speculation about his allegiance.

When praised for his performance, Cherki remained modest, choosing to credit his teammates: “It’s good, we’re a good team to watch. I think we have to look at the whole team — the attention shouldn’t just be on me.”

But it was his reply to a question about Algeria that truly captured attention. When asked about the large number of Algerian fans who support him and dream of seeing him in the Fennecs shirt, the 20-year-old replied coolly: “And regarding Algeria: one thing at a time.”

That single phrase — understated and ambiguous — lit up Algerian media outlets and social networks within minutes. Saik Fellak, the Algerian Football Federation’s head of communications, notably “liked” the video clip on X (formerly Twitter), a gesture that only added fuel to speculation that talks may be progressing behind the scenes.

Cherki, who was born in Lyon and has featured extensively for France at youth level with 22 caps for the Under-21 side, has long been courted by Algeria.

His dual nationality makes him eligible for both nations, but until now, he has remained noncommittal, hoping for a breakthrough with the French senior squad.

Despite a strong season with Lyon — where he leads both Ligue 1 and the UEFA Europa League with eight assists — Cherki was once again overlooked by France manager Didier Deschamps for the March international window.

Deschamps has instead shown preference for other emerging talents such as Bradley Barcola, Désiré Doué, and Michael Olise, leaving Cherki’s path to the senior side increasingly uncertain.

In contrast, Algeria appears eager to integrate the young playmaker into their setup. With an eye on the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, national team officials reportedly view Cherki as a potential pillar of their next generation.

Given his flair, vision, and versatility, a switch to Algeria could not only guarantee him a place in the starting XI but also establish him as a central figure in the team’s future plans.

Still, Cherki remains tight-lipped. His response, though carefully worded, has left many wondering whether a decision could be imminent. The summer transfer window may also prove decisive in shaping his international path.

Should France fail to extend an invitation before the next international break, the scales could tip in favour of Algeria.

For now, the ball remains firmly in Cherki’s court. But if his recent comments are anything to go by, the debate over which shirt he will don on the international stage is far from over. The pressure is mounting — and both nations will be watching his next move with intense interest.
