Chema Andres: Brighton’s new midfield star raises questions over Real Madrid decision

Chema Andres has made an immediate impression at Brighton after just three appearances, prompting comparisons in England with Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri Hernandez.

The 2005-born midfielder has scored once, provided an assist and helped Brighton win all three matches since arriving on the south coast. His performances have quickly made him one of the most intriguing young players in the club’s squad, with some supporters already calling him the “new Rodri”.

Andres and Rodri share several similarities. Both are Spanish, stand at around 1.90m and have played in the Premier League. They are also capable of controlling the tempo from deep midfield positions, creating chances and contributing goals. Even Andres’ preference for wearing his shirt tucked into his shorts has reminded observers of Rodri.

The comparison, however, is based primarily on his style of play. Andres has shown an ability to organise his side, read the game and influence possession from the centre of the pitch.

Born in Valencia in 2005, Andres came through the Real Madrid academy before making three first-team appearances during the 2024-2025 season. Two of those came in La Liga and one in the Copa del Rey.

He subsequently moved to Stuttgart in search of more regular opportunities to develop before joining Brighton, a club renowned for identifying and improving young talent. Under manager Fabian Hurzeler, he has found an environment in which he has been able to establish himself quickly.

Fast start at Brighton

Andres made his Brighton debut against Coventry, playing 25 minutes and setting up a goal. Three days later, he was named in the starting line-up against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup and helped his new side secure an impressive 3-2 victory at Old Trafford.

His next start came against Arsenal in the Premier League, where he produced his most influential performance since moving to England. Andres contributed to Brighton’s build-up play, positioning and midfield structure before scoring the team’s third goal.

The goal came from a set-piece in the 57th minute, completing a memorable evening for the midfielder and Brighton, who won 3-0 on the day the club marked its 125th anniversary.

His influence extended beyond the goal. Andres made two interceptions, recovered possession seven times and won five aerial duels against Arsenal.

Real Madrid questioned over transfer

Andres has played around 200 minutes for Brighton, including 110 minutes in domestic competitions, since completing his move from Stuttgart for €23m on 1 September.

Real Madrid received approximately €11.5m from the deal and retained 50% of the player’s rights. The Spanish club also set a transfer fee of €3m for 2025.

His strong start has revived debate in England about Real Madrid’s decision to part with the young midfielder. Miguel Delaney, writing for The Independent, asked: “How did Real Madrid let go of Chema Andres, when he is now exactly what they need?”

Three matches have been enough to begin the comparisons, but Andres now has the opportunity to establish his own reputation in the Premier League.
