Didier Drogba Likely to Miss Chelsea Season Opener After Ankle Injury
Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is expected to miss the club’s opening match of the season after suffering an ankle injury during a 2-1 pre-season friendly win against Ferencvaros on Sunday.
Initial reports suggest the Ivorian could be sidelined for at least a week, although some media in England have speculated he may be out for up to six months. Drogba has sought to reassure fans, stating on Chelsea’s official website:
“I twisted my ankle and I couldn’t continue. In the next few days, I’ll get treatment and I hope everything goes well.”
The 36-year-old recently announced his retirement from international football, explaining the difficult decision was influenced by a perceived loss of confidence from others.
“It’s a difficult decision because I know what I’m capable of. But from the moment I feel that people no longer have the confidence in me as before, I think it’s a wise decision,” Drogba said.
