Kurt Zouma Looks Forward to Working with José Mourinho at Chelsea

Kurt Zouma is set to begin a new chapter in his career as he prepares to join Chelsea after his transfer from AS Saint-Étienne (ASSE). The promising young defender, acquired by Chelsea for €15 million before being loaned back to Saint-Étienne for the remainder of the season, is eager to embrace the challenge of playing under the tutelage of José Mourinho.

In an exclusive interview with France Football, Zouma revealed details of his first meeting with the Chelsea manager, who immediately recognized his potential. Mourinho expressed a desire to develop Zouma in a similar way to how he helped shape the career of Raphael Varane during his time at Real Madrid.

“He told me I had an interesting profile and that he wanted to do with me what he did with Varane,” Zouma said. “It’s thanks to him that Varane became one of the best French defenders. When a manager tells you that, you say yes immediately. You just have to look at what Varane is achieving today. I’m in the same age group as him, and I want to do the same, even if our styles are different. Being one of the best French defenders is my goal.”

Zouma’s ambition is clear as he looks to progress alongside some of the best players and coaches in the world. He also shared his first impressions of Chelsea’s squad, particularly highlighting his encounters with senior players such as John Terry, Gary Cahill, and Branislav Ivanovic.

Recalling his meeting with club captain Terry, Zouma described the interaction warmly. “I ran into Cahill at the training ground, and Ivanovic as well. I saw Terry in town, and he looked at me from afar, probably unsure if it was me. But he came over and talked to me. I said hello, and he asked how I was and if I’d arrived safely. I managed to speak to him in English, which was really cool. He was very kind.”

The defender’s transition to Chelsea represents an important step in his career development. At just 20 years old, Zouma has already made a strong impression in Ligue 1 and is ready to take on the Premier League, known for its intensity and competitiveness.

With Mourinho’s guidance and a supportive squad environment, Zouma is hopeful he can elevate his game and meet the high expectations set for him. Chelsea’s fans will be watching closely as the young defender aims to follow in the footsteps of fellow French centre-back Varane and make a significant impact at Stamford Bridge.
