Chelsea warned over Barcelona defender Jules Kounde amid worrying form
Chelsea have been linked with a move for Barcelona defender Jules Kounde, but the Frenchman’s recent struggles suggest the Premier League club would need to proceed with caution before committing to a deal.
Barcelona are enjoying a remarkable start to the 2026/27 campaign, winning each of their first eight matches in all competitions to set a new club record. The current side has flourished under Hansi Flick, with Lamine Yamal emerging as a key figure and Raphinha adapting impressively to a central role.
Yet Kounde’s situation stands out as one of the few concerns for Flick.
Kounde has fallen out of favour
The 27-year-old has played only one full LaLiga match this season, against Rayo Vallecano, while his other complete appearance came in the Champions League against Feyenoord.
He managed only 10 minutes across Barcelona’s opening two league games and has remained an unused substitute in their last three league outings.
That represents a significant change for a player who previously appeared to be one of Barcelona’s automatic selections at either right-back or centre-back.
Kounde has acknowledged that his recent performances have not reached his usual level.
“It is a decision by my coach. I feel very good physically. I don’t have any injury. If I have less playing time, it is due to being well below my usual standards,” he said.
He added: “It is a consequence and a challenge that I accept gladly. I will have to work, which is what I normally do.”
His comments suggest he understands that his current position in the squad is linked to performance rather than fitness.
The numbers tell a mixed story
There is evidence that Kounde remains a technically accomplished defender.
Since the beginning of last season, he has made 52 appearances for Barcelona, starting 41 of those matches. He has also completed 3,248 passes, with a 91.87% accuracy rate, placing him among the club’s most reliable distributors.
His defensive numbers also offer reasons for encouragement. Kounde has won 50 of the 78 tackles he has attempted, giving him a 64.1% success rate, while his 106 clearances underline his ability to contribute defensively.
He has also contested 379 duels, winning 206.
However, those statistics do not completely disguise the weaknesses that have increasingly affected his performances.
Final ball has become a major concern
One of the biggest problems has come when Kounde has been asked to contribute from right-back.
Barcelona demand considerable attacking output from their full-backs, particularly when they reach the byline. But since the start of the 2025/26 season, Kounde has completed only 18 crosses, while another 39 attempts have failed to find a teammate.
For a player operating regularly as Barcelona’s right-back, that return raises questions over his effectiveness in the final third.
His defensive performances have also contained warning signs. Kounde has been beaten for pace on several occasions down the right channel and has made the joint-most errors leading to opposition goals within the Barcelona squad.
Attackers have also retained possession 38 times when he has attempted to dispossess them, a figure bettered only in the wrong direction by Fermin Lopez and Pedri among his teammates.
Chelsea need to look beyond his reputation
Kounde has accumulated seven yellow cards since the start of the 2025/26 campaign, placing him joint-third for bookings within the Barcelona squad.
Those figures contrast with his overall involvement, with the defender having attempted the fourth-most duels in the squad. There are clear qualities in his game, but his consistency has become a concern.
For Chelsea, that should make any potential move more complicated than simply signing a player with an established reputation at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Kounde has previously shown that he can operate at the highest level, but his current struggles have changed the context surrounding a possible transfer.
Barcelona’s apparent willingness to listen to offers would only make the situation more intriguing. Chelsea may see an opportunity to recruit an experienced France international, but Kounde’s recent form means his suitability should be assessed beyond his name and previous performances.
If the Frenchman is to revive his career at Stamford Bridge, he would arrive with something to prove.
