Chelsea stage remarkable comeback to beat Leeds United 6-3 in League Cup thriller

Chelsea recovered from two goals down to defeat Leeds United 6-3 in a remarkable third-round tie in the English League Cup at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

The visitors appeared to be in control after taking a commanding lead, but Chelsea turned the match around with four goals in a 12-minute spell after the interval. The nine-goal contest produced dramatic swings in momentum before the hosts finally secured their place in the next round.

Chelsea had started the match with a team dominated by substitutes, and Leeds took advantage of the unfamiliar line-up. Tarik Muharemovic opened the scoring in the 23rd minute to put the visitors ahead.

Brenden Aaronson then doubled Leeds’ advantage three minutes after half-time, leaving Chelsea facing a difficult task at the start of the second period.

The response from the home side was immediate. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso made a series of changes at the beginning of the second half, bringing on Morgan Rogers, Reece James, Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto.

Those alterations had an instant impact. Palmer reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute before restoring parity just two minutes later, completing a rapid Chelsea fightback and making it 2-2.

Chelsea completed the turnaround in the 60th minute when Pedro Neto scored their third goal. Danny Welbeck extended the lead five minutes later, leaving Leeds needing to recover once again.

The visitors refused to surrender and Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one goal back to make it 4-3. However, their hopes of an equaliser were ended in the 80th minute when Valentin Barco restored Chelsea’s two-goal advantage with the home side’s fifth goal.

Welbeck then completed the scoring in the fourth minute of added time, claiming his second goal of the night and confirming a spectacular 6-3 victory for Chelsea.

The result sends Chelsea through to the next stage of the competition after another high-scoring evening at Stamford Bridge. Their progress follows a 2-0 victory over Luton Town in the previous round.

Leeds United had also reached the third round with a 2-0 win, beating Nottingham Forest to set up the tie in west London.

Chelsea’s victory was shaped by the decisive contribution of their second-half substitutes, with Palmer’s two goals providing the initial momentum for the comeback and Welbeck finishing the match with a brace. Leeds had twice held a position of strength, first at 1-0 and then at 2-0, but could not withstand the pressure once Chelsea changed their line-up.

The match ultimately produced nine goals and a dramatic conclusion, with Chelsea scoring five times after the interval to overturn Leeds’ early advantage.
