Premier League outfit Chelsea are reportedly preparing a bid for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as the teenager pushes for a significant salary increase.
According to GIVEMESPORT, the English international of Ghanaian descent wants to remain at Old Trafford beyond his current contract, which expires in 2027.
However, he is seeking a salary that matches some of United’s top earners. This comes at a time when United’s new ownership is looking to cut costs after years of financial struggles.
Mainoo, 19, is one of the lowest-paid players in the squad, earning around £20,000 per week under the four-year contract he signed in February 2023.
The report claims he is asking for a raise to £150,000 per week, with an additional £30,000 increase if United qualify for the Champions League.
The club’s hierarchy is reportedly reluctant to approve big-money contracts, which could lead to the departure of several players in the coming months.
United are currently struggling in 14th place in the Premier League and have been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are in the top four and are pushing for Champions League qualification.
The Blues are reportedly looking to offload midfielder Romeo Lavia, who has struggled with injuries since joining in 2023, and see Mainoo as an ideal replacement.
If United fail to meet Mainoo’s wage demands, Chelsea could make their move to bring the talented midfielder to Stamford Bridge.
