Chelsea set for financial boost if Romelu Lukaku joins Fenerbahce
Chelsea could receive a financial return if former striker Romelu Lukaku completes a move from Napoli to Fenerbahce in the coming days.
The London club is monitoring developments between the Belgian forward and Napoli as BlueCo, Chelsea’s ownership company, continues to work behind the scenes on the club’s transfer-market plans.
Chelsea’s immediate priority is understood to be player sales as they seek to comply with the financial regulations of the Premier League and UEFA. Since BlueCo completed its takeover of the club in 2022, Chelsea have completed a significant number of outgoing transfers, with some agreements including clauses that allow the club to benefit from future moves involving those players.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Fenerbahce have emerged as the leading candidates to sign Lukaku. Napoli do not include the 33-year-old in their plans for next season and are keen to remove his salary from their wage bill.
However, Napoli are reported to require a transfer fee of at least 10m to 12m euros – approximately £8.57m to £10.28m – to avoid recording a financial loss on the sale.
Chelsea would be entitled to 40% of any future transfer fee for Lukaku under the terms agreed with Napoli in 2024. If the Italian club maintain their current valuation, Chelsea would therefore receive at least £3.4m from the striker’s proposed move to Fenerbahce.
Lukaku joined Napoli for an initial fee of 30m euros, worth about £25.7m at the time, with additional clauses included in the deal to ensure Chelsea did not suffer a financial loss from his departure.
The potential payment would represent another financial gain for Chelsea from Lukaku’s career away from Stamford Bridge. Nevertheless, it is not expected to alter the club’s wider transfer plans.
Chelsea’s recruitment under manager Xabi Alonso appears largely complete, with the possible exceptions of signing left-back Pep Chavarria and adding another central midfielder.
Any income from Lukaku’s next transfer could, in theory, give Chelsea greater room for manoeuvre when negotiating other player sales. It could also help the club structure further agreements while remaining within the financial limits set by the Premier League and UEFA.
The ownership group is continuing to oversee both arrivals and departures, but the focus at present is on completing sales rather than making major additions. A move to Fenerbahce would allow Napoli to move on from Lukaku’s wages, while Chelsea would benefit from the sell-on provision written into the 2024 agreement.
Lukaku’s next destination remains to be finalised, but Fenerbahce are currently regarded as the strongest contenders to complete the deal. Chelsea will be watching the outcome closely because the size of the transfer fee could determine the value of their 40% share.
