EssenAfrica Top Sport reported this morning that Michael Essien’s agent was in Italy to discuss the terms of his transfer, and the deal is now complete. The midfielder’s time with Chelsea has officially come to an end, as he is set to join AC Milan. The Guinean player is expected in Italy this evening to finalize his commitment to the Lombard club. According to the latest information, Essien will join his compatriot Muntari on a permanent basis for a season and a half.
Jose Mourinho, Chelsea’s manager, confirmed the news at a press conference held this afternoon. In thinly veiled terms, Mourinho stated, “Michael Essien is, currently, in a position where he has a choice. If he stays, I will be more than happy. But if he leaves, I have to say that he gave everything for the club, and if a good offer comes for him, and allows him to play more with a view to the World Cup as well, all at a high level, then in the same way that Chelsea let him go to Real Madrid, the door will not be closed to him.”
Essien, often referred to as the Ghanaian Bison, has been a part of Stamford Bridge since 2005.
