Chelsea must move for Fabregas to replace Rosenior – Materazzi
Italy great Marco Materazzi has urged Chelsea FC to make a decisive managerial change this summer, insisting the club should pursue Cesc Fabregas as a potential successor to under-fire head coach Liam Rosenior.
Pressure continues to mount at Stamford Bridge following a disappointing run of results that has left Chelsea outside the Premier League’s top four, with Champions League qualification slipping further from reach. Their FA Cup semi-final clash against Leeds United now represents a crucial opportunity to salvage silverware in what has otherwise been an underwhelming campaign.
Rosenior’s position has come under increasing scrutiny from the club’s hierarchy, with performances failing to match expectations despite a squad assembled with significant investment. Materazzi, speaking to Hajper, questioned whether the current manager is the right fit for a youthful Chelsea side still searching for identity and consistency.
“I was at Everton against Chelsea. I was at the FIFA Club World Cup final,” Materazzi said. “With Enzo Maresca, they were a totally different team. What I saw in Liverpool was an easy game for Everton. Chelsea did not impress me. I think they have to change.”
The Italian went further by endorsing Fabregas, currently impressing in his managerial role at Como 1907, as the ideal candidate to guide Chelsea’s next phase. According to Materazzi, the Spaniard’s tactical understanding and connection with younger players make him a natural fit for the club’s evolving project.
“They are a young team and I don’t know if they have the best manager for what Chelsea need right now. They have to try for Cesc Fabregas this summer,” he added.
Fabregas, a former Chelsea midfielder, has earned praise for his work in Italy, though Materazzi acknowledged the challenge of luring him away from Como amid their own ambitions. Still, he believes a return to west London could be a logical step in the future.
Internally, Chelsea’s struggles appear to extend beyond results. Reports of dressing room tension, including a fallout involving Enzo Fernandez and comments from Marc Cucurella, have added to concerns over cohesion within the squad, further intensifying the spotlight on Rosenior’s leadership.
