Demba Ba’s Chelsea Future in Doubt Despite Champions League Heroics

At times, it’s difficult. In [Mourinho’s] head, I don’t know what he has, I just know that there are a lot of things.”
His comments come as speculation mounts over his future at the club, with reports suggesting he could be among several forwards moved on this summer. Ba joined Chelsea from Newcastle United in January 2013 but has failed to cement a regular starting role, finding himself behind Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto’o in José Mourinho’s pecking order this term.
Despite Ba’s frustrations, Mourinho was quick to praise the striker’s professionalism following his European exploits. “The players work hard and well. Even those who don’t play regularly, they are all good professionals and try to be ready. You can see Demba Ba as an example of a player who doesn’t play much and was ready to try to live up to expectations,” said the Portuguese boss.
Whether Ba’s performance against PSG will be enough to earn him a starting place in Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Swansea on Sunday remains to be seen. While the goal has reminded fans and pundits alike of his quality, Ba’s own words reflect a player who is increasingly disillusioned and open to new opportunities.
With Chelsea reportedly eyeing a marquee striker in the upcoming transfer window, Ba may be among those who make way. Still, his decisive Champions League moment ensures his time at Stamford Bridge will not be forgotten.
