Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed his joy with Ghanaian defender Josh Acheampong committing to the club.
The English-born defender of Ghanaian descent signed a long-term deal at Chelsea, keeping him at the club until 2029.
Acheampong’s future at the club had been uncertain over the past few months after talks between the club and the player’s entourage at a standstill.
He was frozen out at the club until recent times when talks grew position.
“I am very, very happy. With Josh it has been quite clear, we had him in pre-season and I didn’t know him personally but within two or three days, he really impressed me.
“Since pre-season I have been trying to better understand the situation with him because of his contract and this kind of thing.
“Finally the club has found an agreement with him and we are all happy because we are all convinced and we are all sure Josh can be a great player for this club.”
Acheampong made his full debut last week as Josh started in our Europa Conference League victory over Astana in Kazakhstan. He was also named among the substitutes for our victory over Brentford on Sunday.
He has represented Chelsea at youth level but is yet to play for the senior national team. He is also eligible to play for Ghana.
However, he made his mark on the international stage, featuring for England at the Under-17 European Championships in the summer of 2023 and the Under-17 World Cup the following November.
