Chelsea are reportedly still monitoring Manchester United duo Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo ahead of the summer transfer window, as United consider offloading homegrown talent to comply with Premier League financial regulations.
Mainoo, who is of Ghanaian heritage, has emerged as one of United’s most promising young players.
The 20-year-old midfielder has impressed with his composure, vision, and tactical maturity since breaking into the first team.
His rise has caught the attention of top clubs, with Chelsea said to be keen on acquiring the England youth international if Manchester United decide to make him available.
According to The Daily Mail, United’s need to generate revenue through player sales is driven by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which encourage clubs to balance their books while maintaining competitive squads.
Homegrown players like Mainoo and Garnacho are seen as particularly valuable assets because any income from their transfers is counted as ‘pure profit’ on financial statements, as they did not require transfer fees to acquire.
Chelsea previously made enquiries about both players in the January window but were rebuffed by then-interim management.
However, with significant restructuring expected at Old Trafford this summer, including possible changes to the coaching and executive staff, the London club is reportedly ready to reignite its pursuit if the situation changes.
Mainoo’s potential departure would mark a significant shift for United, who have long prided themselves on promoting academy talent.
The midfielder has been central to Erik ten Hag’s plans when fit and is widely viewed as a long-term asset. Garnacho, also 20, has enjoyed a breakout season as well, adding further complexity to any decision regarding their futures.
Both Chelsea and Manchester United are preparing for major overhauls as they aim to re-establish themselves as Premier League title contenders.
