Chelsea have extended Joao Pedro’s contract until 2034 and handed the Brazil international the number nine shirt.

The 24-year-old forward has signed a new deal running until the summer of 2034, just one season after joining Chelsea from Brighton on a contract that had originally been due to expire in 2033.

Joao Pedro wore the number 20 shirt during his first campaign at Stamford Bridge, but will take over the number nine for the new season. The change follows the expected departure of Liam Delap, who is set to leave Chelsea after one season with the London club.

“I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea,” Joao Pedro told the club’s website. “I have always dreamed of playing for a big club, and it means a lot to me to commit to this club for the long term.”

He added: “Chelsea have a great history of winning and have big ambitions for the future.”

Joao Pedro continued: “I have an excellent relationship with everyone here at the club, and I have felt at home here in London from the moment I arrived. Everyone is very excited for this season.”

“We know we can achieve a lot because we have a great team and an ambitious manager who wants to win and has already done so,” he said. “I am fully committed, everyone is ready, and hopefully we can achieve our goals.”

The extension comes after a productive first season in Chelsea colours. Joao Pedro joined the club during their campaign at the FIFA Club World Cup last summer and helped them win the competition, scoring in both the semi-final and final.

He finished his first season with 20 goals for Chelsea and was also voted the club’s player of the year by supporters.

Joao Pedro began his career with Brazilian side Fluminense before moving to Watford and then Brighton. His performances at Brighton earned him a move to Chelsea, where he quickly became an important part of the squad.

Despite his club form, Joao Pedro was left out of Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. Brazil were eliminated in the round of 16 by Norway, with his omission regarded as one of the major surprises in the Selecao squad.

Chelsea begin the new campaign against Fulham in the final match of the opening Premier League round on Monday, 24 August. Joao Pedro is expected to start the season wearing the number nine shirt as Chelsea look to build on their success at the Club World Cup.
