Chelsea defender Mamadou Sarr set for Real Sociedad move after European interest

Chelsea defender Mamadou Sarr will spend the coming season with Real Sociedad after completing a move to the Spanish club.

The Senegal international’s transfer had been expected for several days before Real Sociedad confirmed the agreement. The 20-year-old centre-back will join on a temporary basis, with the deal covering one year and including no option for the Spanish club to buy him permanently.

Sarr has struggled to establish himself in Chelsea’s first-team squad and was unable to convince the club’s new coaching staff that he was ready to secure a regular place in London. He returned to Chelsea in January after a loan spell at Strasbourg, but has now been allowed to leave again in search of more playing opportunities.

The defender had attracted interest from a number of clubs before Real Sociedad completed the deal. Italian side Como made enquiries about his situation, while RB Leipzig also took steps to explore the possibility of signing him. There was further interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, but Real Sociedad ultimately won the race to take the “Lion of Teranga” to Spain.

Sarr remains under contract with Chelsea until 2033. His reported annual salary in London is €2,134,163 (£1,387,205,950 CFA francs), while his market value is estimated at €22m by Transfermarkt.

The move represents another change to Chelsea’s defensive options as the club continues to reshape that area of the squad. Sarr’s latest loan provides him with the opportunity to continue his development away from Stamford Bridge, while Real Sociedad gain the services of a young international defender for the season.

Chelsea’s next fixture is against Brighton in the second round of the English league season. The match is scheduled to take place shortly, with 1xBet listing Chelsea as the favourites at odds of 2.00. A draw is priced at 3.75, while a Brighton victory is listed at 3.60.

Sarr’s departure comes after a period in which he has found it difficult to break into Chelsea’s senior set-up. Despite remaining tied to the club on a long-term contract, the centre-back has spent much of his recent development away from the first-team group, including his time at Strasbourg.

At Real Sociedad, he will now look to secure regular football and strengthen his reputation in Spain. The club’s decision to bring him in follows interest from several European and Saudi Arabian sides, but the agreement with Chelsea does not give Real Sociedad the option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the loan.
