Chelsea-backed Gessime Yassine’s rapid rise continues at Strasbourg

Chelsea are encouraged by the rapid development of Strasbourg winger Gessime Yassine, whose rise from amateur football to the World Cup has strengthened BlueCo’s belief in the young player’s potential.

BlueCo, which owns both Strasbourg and Chelsea, signed Yassine for Strasbourg in January for £5m, approximately €5.75m. According to TEAMtalk, the move is already regarded within the English group as a promising investment.

Mohamed Chaouch has described Yassine as having “everything needed to become a future Ligue 1 leader”.

Yassine’s progress began at Istres, where he was playing in France’s fifth tier only a few years ago. His ability soon attracted the attention of former Chelsea and Newcastle striker Demba Ba.

Ba was director of football and co-owner of Dunkerque, then in Ligue 2, when he decided to take a chance on the winger in 2024. Yassine quickly justified that decision, gradually establishing himself and beginning to attract wider attention in France.

After an especially impressive season, during which he scored three goals and provided eight assists in 15 appearances, interest in the player extended beyond France. The City Football Group, associated with Manchester City, and Red Bull were both reported to be monitoring him and were prepared to offer potential routes towards the highest level.

BlueCo ultimately won the race for his signature. Yassine immediately joined Strasbourg’s first team after the January transfer and continued his rapid development.

World Cup opportunity

His performances for Strasbourg soon brought another major opportunity. To widespread surprise, Yassine was selected in Morocco’s World Cup squad and scored during the tournament, placing an even greater spotlight on his story.

For BlueCo, that progression has provided early support for the decision to invest in him. TEAMtalk reported that sources close to the situation believe the €5.75m fee could prove particularly valuable given the player’s potential.

Despite his remarkable ascent, BlueCo does not believe Yassine has reached his limit. His journey from amateur football to the international stage in such a short period is understood to have strengthened the group’s conviction that he can develop further.

Chelsea can monitor that progress closely through BlueCo’s multi-club structure, with Yassine now viewed as one of the most promising young players within the group’s network.

His career has taken him from Istres in the fifth division to a place at the World Cup, underlining how quickly a player’s prospects can change when his talent is identified at the right time.
