Cheikhou Kouyaté retires from international football and reveals heart condition
Cheikhou Kouyaté has announced his retirement from international football after nearly two decades at the highest level, while revealing that he has been living with a heart condition since birth.
The 36-year-old former Senegal captain disclosed his health condition during an appearance on Walf TV, explaining that it had affected his club career and made it difficult for him to secure contracts with some teams.
Kouyaté, who was part of Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations winning team in 2021, said his condition had been monitored throughout his career, particularly during his time in England.
“I have an illness; I was born with it. In England, it was monitored with all the clubs I played for. When I signed with Nottingham for the 2022-2023 season, they wanted to offer me a two-year contract.
When they found out, they refused to let me sign for one year. It was the same with Leeds when I wanted to sign. The doctor also took note and didn’t want to take the risk,” he explained.
The condition became an increasing obstacle as Kouyaté attempted to continue his professional career.
He left Nottingham Forest in 2022 and subsequently spent a lengthy period without a club before joining Turkish side Amed SK in 2025.
His spell with Amed SK ultimately became his final experience as a professional footballer.
Kouyaté’s career with Senegal was equally significant. The midfielder, who later featured in defence, became one of the experienced figures in the Lions squad and served as captain.
He was part of the Senegal side that won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, securing the country’s first title in the competition.
His final appearance for Senegal came in March 2024, bringing an end to a long international career with the Lions.
Kouyaté remained connected to the national team during the World Cup under Pape Thiaw, joining the squad despite not having an official role.
After years of representing Senegal and competing at the highest level, Kouyaté has now decided to close that chapter of his career.
His announcement also brought to light a health condition he had kept largely private while continuing to play professional football.
