Senegalese winger Cheikh Tidiane Sabaly makes long-awaited MLS debut for Vancouver

Cheikh Tidiane Sabaly has finally made his Major League Soccer debut, featuring for Vancouver in their 3-0 victory over Toronto after overcoming administrative delays.

The Senegalese winger, whose move from Ligue 1 during the last transfer window drew attention, had been unable to play since arriving in Canada due to work permit issues in the United States.

That situation has now been resolved, clearing the way for his first official appearance in MLS.

Sabaly started on the bench but was introduced in the 71st minute as Vancouver closed out a comfortable win.

Although he did not score, his presence added energy in the closing stages and marked the end of a frustrating wait since completing his transfer.

His move to Vancouver Whitecaps FC had been one of the notable transactions of the recent window, particularly given his departure from France’s top flight.

Expectations followed the 24-year-old upon his arrival, yet his competitive debut was delayed by paperwork complications rather than tactical decisions.

According to Wiw Sport, the necessary documentation has now been finalised, allowing the Senegal international to participate fully in domestic competition.

His introduction against Toronto FC signalled the beginning of his new chapter in North American football.

Vancouver’s 3-0 result ensured Sabaly’s debut came in positive circumstances, with the team already in control of proceedings when he entered the field.

While he did not add his name to the scoresheet, his involvement offered a glimpse of what he may contribute in the weeks ahead.

For Sabaly, the appearance represents more than just 19 minutes on the pitch; it closes a period of uncertainty and opens the opportunity to establish himself in MLS.

Having completed the final step required to compete, he can now focus entirely on adapting to the demands of his new league.

With administrative hurdles behind him, attention will turn to how quickly he can secure a regular role within Vancouver’s squad as the season progresses.
