Cheikh Ndoye inspires Cannes to historic Coupe de France semi-final

Cheikh Ndoye inspires Cannes to historic Coupe de France semi-final

At 38 years old, Senegalese midfielder Cheikh Ndoye continues to defy expectations, playing a pivotal role in Cannes’ remarkable journey to the Coupe de France semi-finals.

The National 2 side stunned Guingamp with a 3-1 victory, knocking out their Ligue 2 opponents and securing a place among the final four—a rare feat for a fourth-division club.

A story of determination and perseverance

Ndoye’s journey in football is far from conventional. Before making a name for himself on the pitch, he worked as a carpenter in Senegal, pursuing football as an amateur while balancing his trade.

His career almost took a different path after an unsuccessful trial at Stoke City and a potential move to Saudi Arabia, which was derailed by injury.

Despite these setbacks, Ndoye refused to give up. His breakthrough came in France, where he started at Épinal, forming a formidable midfield trio with two fellow Senegalese players.

Their performances helped propel the club to Ligue 2, marking the beginning of his professional rise.

Experience across France and England

Ndoye’s impressive displays earned him moves to Créteil and Angers, where he shone in Ligue 1, demonstrating his strength, leadership, and aerial ability.

His performances caught the attention of Birmingham City, leading to a spell in England’s Championship before he returned to France to play for Red Star.

Now at Cannes, he remains a key figure, using his experience and leadership to guide the team in one of their most memorable cup campaigns.

Cannes’ Cup run continues

Against Guingamp, Ndoye played the entire match, commanding the midfield and helping his team secure a victory that will be remembered in the club’s history.

The win underscores Cannes’ resilience and determination as they continue to defy the odds in the Coupe de France.

As the club now prepares for the semi-finals, Ndoye will look to lead his team to yet another upset, proving that age is no barrier to success in football. His story remains one of perseverance, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the game.
