Cheikh Fantamady Diarra Extends Stay at Auxerre Despite Transfer Speculation
Malian striker Cheikh Fantamady Diarra has signed a contract extension with French Ligue 2 side AJ Auxerre, putting an end to speculation about a potential move abroad.
The 22-year-old had reached the end of his previous deal, but the club confirmed he has signed a one-year extension, with an option for two additional seasons.
Diarra played a key role in Auxerre’s campaign last season, making 35 appearances in Ligue 2, including 21 starts, and scoring five goals. He was also part of the squad that reached the final of the Coupe de France.
Reports in recent weeks had linked the forward with a move to Tunisia, where José Anigo — recently appointed head coach of Espérance de Tunis — was reportedly interested in bringing him to North Africa.
However, Diarra has opted to continue his development in France, where he hopes to help Auxerre push for promotion to Ligue 1.
The extension is seen as a show of faith by the club in Diarra’s potential, and offers the young Malian an opportunity to build on a solid season and establish himself as a key figure in the squad.
