Charles McCarthy: Ghanaian midfielder joins CS Afumati on free transfer from Modelu

Ghanaian midfielder Charles McCarthy has joined Romanian Liga 2 side CS Afumati on a free transfer from Modelu. The 22-year-old central midfielder moves across the Romanian pyramid after finalising his switch on 22 July 2026.

McCarthy, who stands at 1.68m and plays predominantly as a central midfielder, arrives at Afumati as a right-footed option in the middle of the pitch. The move keeps him in Romanian football after his spell with Modelu, which he joined in 2024, also on a free transfer.

Before arriving in Romania, McCarthy spent the early stages of his career in Ghana with Elmina Sharks and Hearts of Oak. He moved from Elmina Sharks to Hearts of Oak in 2018, again on a free, and later left the Accra-based club in 2019. His switch to Afumati marks another step in a career that has already taken him from the Ghanaian top flight into European football.

McCarthy has experience of domestic cup football, having completed the full 90 minutes in a Romanian Cup tie, and now steps into a Liga 2 environment where Afumati will look to strengthen their squad depth in midfield.

The Ghanaian’s transfer from Modelu to CS Afumati is a permanent free transfer, with the deal completed ahead of the 2026–27 campaign.
