Before their encounter in the quarter-finals of CAN 2013, Burkinabé midfielder Charles Kaboré extended his congratulations to Togolese player Alaixys Romao for his recent transfer to Marseille. Kaboré also wished Romao a warm welcome to the club. He dismissed any notion of hostility toward Romao, emphasizing that they are competitors on the pitch but part of the same football family. Kaboré stated, “It’s not Kaboré against Romao. I’m not in the business of saying that because he plays the same position as me and he was recently recruited that he’s my enemy. He’s a competitor, I have a lot of respect for him. I welcome him to Marseille. Either way, Marseille is a family, and we are all the same. He is Togolese, I am Burkinabé, it is the same family, and only the best plays.”
