A major upset! Guinea knocked Senegal out in the final round of qualifiers for the African Nations Championship, a tournament reserved for players based in their own countries. After losing 1-0 in Thiès, the Guineans managed to turn the tide in a penalty shootout.
In the first leg, Lappé Bangoura and his men lost 1-0 in Senegal. They will have to hold firm against a team with extensive experience in this competition.
In the first half, all of the home side’s attempts were thwarted, and it was in the second half that the Guineans finally broke through, scoring the decisive goal thanks to Mamadouba Bangoura (1-0).
No further goals were scored before the final whistle. Over the two legs, the two teams were evenly matched and were forced to settle the tie with a penalty shootout.
Coming on as a late substitute, goalkeeper Sékouba Camara was instrumental in securing the victory, saving three out of four shots. Guinea thus qualifies for the final tournament.
