Senegal showed impressive character on Tuesday evening, defeating Nigeria 1-0 to begin their campaign at the 2025 CAF TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) on a positive note.
The champions of the last edition of the tournament faced off with Nigeria in their opening match today, and had to fight throughout the match to earn all three points.
In the game played at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar City, both teams gave a good account of themselves in the first half, doing their best to score.
Unfortunately, neither side could find the back of the net and had to settle for a draw at the break.
In the second half, defending champions Senegal continued to push and finally made the breakthrough in the 75th minute, scoring through Christian Gomis after he was set up by Moctar Koita to take the lead.
Despite the best efforts of the Nigerians, the team could not breach the defense of Senegal and had to settle for a narrow defeat at the end of the contest.
The win means Senegal takes the top spot in Group D after the first round of group games.
