Uganda head coach Morley Byekwaso has expressed confidence in his squad ahead of their decisive Group C fixture against Niger at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Monday.
The match, scheduled for 17:00 local time, could see the Cranes secure top spot in the group with a victory. Uganda currently sit second in the standings, just one point behind the group leaders, who have four points from two matches. In contrast, Niger remain at the bottom of the table, having failed to collect any points from their only game so far.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Byekwaso stressed the significance of the fixture and outlined his belief in the depth and adaptability of his team.
“Every match is different,” he said. “Each opponent brings its own challenges and requires a unique tactical approach. I can’t promise we’ll line up with the same team as last time, but we may make some adjustments depending on Niger’s strengths and weaknesses.”
While Byekwaso did not reveal his starting eleven, he indicated that players who impressed in the previous match are likely to be rewarded with another opportunity to prove themselves.
Uganda, buoyed by a strong performance in their last outing, are aiming to carry that momentum into this final group-stage match. A win would not only solidify their position in the top two but could see them leapfrog into first place, depending on other results.
“This is a very important match for us,” Byekwaso said. “We’re aware of what’s at stake. A victory here would significantly boost our chances of reaching the knockout stage.”
Beyond the tactical and technical elements, the Ugandan coach also took a moment to acknowledge the passionate support of the home crowd, which he described as a vital factor in motivating the players.
“I want to thank the fans who came out in large numbers during our last match,” he added. “It was the first time I’ve seen such incredible support behind us, and it gave the team a real lift. We respect our supporters immensely and promise to give everything on the pitch. Their energy makes a difference.”
Niger, who lost their opening match, face a steep challenge if they are to keep their CHAN 2024 hopes alive. They must take all three points against Uganda to stand any chance of progressing, adding further intensity to what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.
Byekwaso, however, remains focused on his own squad and their preparation. With a place in the quarter-finals within reach, he has urged his players to remain disciplined, focused, and united as they look to take the next step in the tournament.
With Group C still open and all to play for, Monday’s clash between Uganda and Niger is shaping up to be a defining moment in the group stage. A win for Uganda would mark a major stride forward, while defeat could open the door for late drama in the final group standings.
