Morocco’s Oussama Lamlioui is leading the chase for the Golden Boot at the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN, heading into Saturday’s final with four goals to his name.
The RS Berkane forward has been Morocco’s standout performer in the competition, scoring in three consecutive matches and converting in the semi-final shootout against Senegal.
His form has kept the Atlas Lions on track for a possible third CHAN crown, while firmly establishing him as the tournament’s top scorer.
Trailing Lamlioui are South Africa’s Thabiso Kutumela and Uganda’s Allan Okello, both of whom finished with three goals despite their countries exiting earlier in the tournament. Kutumela carried much of Bafana Bafana’s attacking threat, while Okello inspired Uganda to a historic first-ever quarter-final berth.
A number of players remain on two goals, including Madagascar’s Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa, Sudan’s Ahmed Omer, Morocco’s Mohamed Hrimat and Sabir Bougrine, Algeria’s Soufiane Bayazid, and Kenya’s duo of Austin Odhiambo and Ryan Ogam. Madagascar also boasts Fenohasina Razafimaro and Toky Rakotondraibe on two goals each, highlighting their attacking depth as they prepare for the final.
The tournament has showcased a wide spread of scorers, with over 60 players from across the continent finding the net, from debutants Kenya to African heavyweights like Algeria, Nigeria and DR Congo.
Lamlioui will be eager to score in the final against Madagascar to not only help Morocco to clinch the CHAN 2024 trophy, but to claim the Golden Boot award as well.
