The head coach of Kenya’s national team, Benni McCarthy was full of praise for his players on Friday afternoon despite exiting the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The co-host of the tournament faced off with their counterparts from Madagascar on the day, drawing 1-1 in the 90 minutes plus extra time.
In the penalty shootout, Madagascar defeated Kenya 4-3 to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament.
Speaking in his post-match interview, Coach Benni McCarthy applauded his players for giving everything.
“Nothing but proud of what we achieved. The players gave everything every single day in training and every match,” McCarthy said as quoted on CAFOnline.
He added, “It was really good but football is like that, the lottery of penalties sometimes doesn’t go your way.”
In his assessment of the quarter-final match, Benni McCarthy congratulated the Madagascar team on their victory, insisting that they gave his side a tough match.
“It is a bit tough to go out this way. We expected a tough game but didn’t expect them to be this way. Their movement off the ball was great. I want to congratulate Madagascar for their passage to the semis.
“If you come to Kenya and can perform at such a stage with the fans and the noise, they deserve huge credit for having nerves of steel, especially in the penalty shootout,” Benni McCarthy said.
