Mauritania’s journey in the African Nations Championship came to an end yesterday with their elimination after two consecutive defeats in as many matches. The final match, held on Saturday against Burundi, concluded with a narrow 2-3 loss in a highly dramatic encounter, decided only in stoppage time.
Despite Mauritania taking an early lead with a goal from Voulany in the 2nd minute, Burundi managed to equalize through Abdul Fiston and then seize the lead with a goal from Christophe Nduwarugira. Patrice Neveu’s team fought back, leveling the score once again with a goal from Denna. However, in the 93rd minute, Yamini Ndikumana surprised everyone with a powerful strike from 30 meters, securing the victory for Burundi and bringing an end to Mauritania’s campaign in the tournament.
