CHAN 2014: MAURITANIA ELIMINATED, BURUNDI REGAINS THE LEAD OF GROUP D

This Saturday in Group D of the African Nations Championship featured a rematch between Mauritania and Burundi. The Mourabitounes faced a heartbreaking elimination as they succumbed to a stunning 30-meter strike during added time, resulting in a final score of 3-2.

Despite a promising start for Mauritania, with Cheikh Voulany scoring in the 2nd minute, their lead was short-lived. Neveu’s team created numerous opportunities but failed to convert, leading to an equalizer by Abdul Fiston in the 12th minute. The first half concluded with a 1-1 score, thanks in part to Souleymane Diallo of Mauritania saving a penalty from Yamini Ndikumana.

In the second half, Mauritania made efforts to take control of the game, with Moulaye Bessam creating chances that went unrewarded. However, Burundi seized the opportunity, with Christophe Nduwarugira’s precise shot finding the net. Undeterred, the Mourabitounes staged a comeback, equalizing thanks to Taghiyoullah Denna. Just as the match seemed destined for a draw, Yamini Ndikumana stunned everyone with a powerful 30-meter strike in the 93rd minute.

Unfortunately, Mauritania exits the competition with two consecutive defeats. Meanwhile, Burundi, with 4 points, now leads Group D in Gabon, where DR Congo had earlier been defeated by Gabon (1-0).
