The list of qualifiers for the upcoming 2014 African Nations Championship is expanding. Following Congo’s qualification earlier in the day, Mali has now secured their ticket. After a convincing 3-1 victory in the first leg against Guinea, the Malian team knew what was required to advance to South Africa.
In Conakry this Sunday, the Eagles successfully completed the task, despite facing a few anxious moments. While they were already leading 1-0, the Guinean team was awarded a penalty. However, goalkeeper Soumbeila Diakité made a crucial save, denying the Syli striker’s shot. The final score of 1-0 was insufficient for Guinea to overturn the aggregate score.
With Mali’s qualification, the total number of confirmed teams heading to South Africa is now 11, joining Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Congo, Morocco, Libya, Ethiopia, and Uganda.
The last qualifier will be determined later in the evening with the match between Sudan and Burundi (1-1 in the first leg).
