Algeria has officially withdrawn its A’ team from the CHAN 2014 qualifiers, as announced by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) on its website. The CHAN final phase is scheduled to take place in South Africa from January 11 to February 1, 2014.
The decision to withdraw was attributed to the perceived inability of Algeria to field a competitive team against Libya. The local Fennecs were initially set to host the Knights of the Mediterranean on June 23, followed by a trip to Tripoli on July 5.
Reports from the Algerian site Dz Foot suggest that the primary motivation behind the decision was the significantly limited security conditions in Tripoli. The FAF, evidently unwilling to take the risk of exposing its team to such a tense context, opted to withdraw from the CHAN qualifiers.
