The much-anticipated clash between Zamalek and Al Ahly, two giants of African football, ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving supporters disappointed. The match, which had been postponed twice, took place in El Gouna, more than 500 km from Cairo, due to concerns about the socio-political situation in the capital.
Zamalek took an early lead with a goal by Ahmed Gaafar in the 8th minute. Al Ahly struggled initially but managed to equalize with a penalty from Mohamed Aboutrika in the 54th minute. The remainder of the match saw both teams creating opportunities but failing to capitalize on them.
The draw means that neither Al Ahly nor Zamalek could seize the opportunity to take the lead in Group A of the African Champions League. Both teams now have 1 point, just like the other two teams in the group, Orlando Pirates and AC Leopards, who played to a goalless draw last Saturday.
