Following the closure of the July 5 Stadium for renovations, USM Alger sought an alternative venue for their opening group stage match of the CAF Champions League against Wydad Casablanca, proposing the August 20 Stadium in Algiers. However, this proposal was firmly rejected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), forcing the club to secure a different location to ensure the fixture proceeds as scheduled.

Determined not to miss the start of their Champions League campaign, USM Alger has now confirmed that the match will take place next Saturday at the Tchaker Stadium in Blida. The decision comes after the club faced complications with the August 20 Stadium, whose synthetic pitch, despite recent renovations, reportedly does not meet FIFA standards, making it unsuitable to host high-level continental fixtures. This development underscores the logistical challenges faced by Algerian clubs in meeting CAF requirements when their primary stadiums are unavailable.

Last Wednesday, a CAF delegation visited Algeria to inspect the proposed venues for the upcoming group stage matches. In addition to USMA’s game against Wydad Casablanca, they also evaluated the stadiums for JS Kabylie’s fixture against Congolese club Vita Club. According to the Moroccan newspaper Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, the CAF officials concluded that the August 20 Stadium was unsuitable for USMA’s match. This decision reflects CAF’s strict adherence to stadium standards for continental competitions, including pitch quality, safety measures, and facilities for players, officials, and fans.

The July 5 Stadium, Algeria’s largest sports venue, had been closed by authorities for extensive renovations, leaving USM Alger without their preferred home ground. Initially, the club had hoped to move the fixture to the August 20 Stadium in Algiers, but CAF’s rejection necessitated a last-minute adjustment to ensure compliance with international standards. The selection of the Tchaker Stadium in Blida as the new venue provides USMA with a suitable alternative that meets the Confederation’s requirements, allowing the club to host Wydad Casablanca without further delays.

USM Alger officials emphasized their commitment to honoring the fixture and maintaining their Champions League ambitions despite these logistical challenges. The team and staff are now focused on preparing for the match at Tchaker Stadium, ensuring that players are familiar with the venue and ready to perform at the highest level. While the last-minute change posed potential disruptions, the club has mobilized resources to minimize any negative impact and maintain competitive readiness.

CAF’s intervention highlights the importance of proper infrastructure in African club competitions, where stadium compliance is crucial to ensure fair play and safety. Algerian clubs, including USM Alger and JS Kabylie, must navigate these requirements carefully, particularly when renovations or closures affect traditional home grounds. By securing Tchaker Stadium, USMA has addressed CAF’s concerns while safeguarding the integrity of the tournament and their opportunity to start the group stage strongly.

The upcoming match between USM Alger and Wydad Casablanca promises to be a highly anticipated contest in Group C of the CAF Champions League. With the venue now confirmed, both teams can focus on tactical preparations, while fans anticipate a competitive and exciting kickoff to the group stage, despite the earlier venue uncertainty.
