The CAF Champions League group stage kicks off this Friday, November 29, with a high-profile clash between two African giants: TP Mazembe and Zamalek. Both clubs have won the prestigious trophy five times, and this opening match promises to set the tone for Group A.
The Ravens of Lubumbashi and the White Knights of Cairo will meet on Saturday in what is already being billed as a “clash of the titans.” TP Mazembe, celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, is aiming for a sixth Champions League title. The Congolese club is counting on the stability of its squad and coaching staff, led by former club defender Pamphile Mihayo, to achieve this ambitious goal.
Mihayo emphasized that preparations have focused not just on this opening match but on the entire group stage, which consists of three matches in the first leg and three in the second. “We have prepared well for this match. But I must say that it is not only for this match (against Zamalek) that we have prepared, rather for this whole group stage,” he explained.
Facing a Zamalek team under new management, Mihayo admitted that he lacks detailed information about the opponent’s current style of play. However, he is relying on his experience with Maghreb football to prepare his team strategically. “For tomorrow, we will do everything we can to win the three points. I know the playing style of the Maghreb teams. But for the new coach, I don’t have any videos to get a good idea of how his team plays. Be that as it may, I am preparing my team on my end, both offensively and defensively,” Mihayo said.
With both clubs boasting a rich history in African football, the match is expected to be fiercely contested. TP Mazembe will look to leverage home advantage and tactical discipline, while Zamalek aims to assert themselves early under their new coach.
As the group stage begins, this first encounter serves as a critical test for both sides, with Mazembe hoping to start strong on their path toward continental glory and Zamalek eager to make a statement in the competition. Fans can expect a thrilling battle between two of Africa’s most successful clubs, setting the stage for an exciting Champions League campaign.
