Although still regarded as one of Africa’s most prestigious clubs, JS Kabylie head into the 2019–2020 CAF Champions League campaign with a squad that has been significantly weakened over the summer. Despite the departures and changes, the Algerian side remain a dangerous opponent and are determined to prove they can still compete with the continent’s elite.
Guided by experienced French coach Hubert Velud, the Canaries face a daunting challenge in what many observers have labeled a “group of death.” Drawn alongside AS Vita Club of DR Congo, Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca, and defending champions Espérance de Tunis, JSK will need to be at their very best to secure qualification for the next round.
Their continental journey begins next Friday with a home clash against Vita Club at the Stade du 1er Novembre in Tizi Ouzou. Speaking ahead of the opener, Velud chose to keep his cards close to his chest regarding preparations.
“The match is approaching, but we haven’t discussed Vita Club yet. We know this team, but we can’t reveal everything tonight,” the coach said, hinting at a carefully planned strategy for the Congolese side.
There was also good news for the club concerning the venue. The November 1st Stadium has officially been approved to host the Champions League fixture, allowing JSK to count on the strong backing of their passionate home supporters. The stadium is expected to be packed, as fans look forward to seeing their team return to Africa’s biggest stage.
However, club officials have taken the opportunity to remind supporters of their responsibilities. Conscious of CAF’s strict disciplinary rules, management has issued a strong appeal for calm and exemplary behavior in the stands to avoid sanctions that could harm the team’s campaign.
“We are counting on our supporters to act responsibly and conscientiously to give the best possible image of your club. The future of JSK in Africa is in your hands,” the statement read. “We urge our supporters to be exemplary and fair play, while avoiding mistakes such as throwing projectiles, water bottles, flares or any objects onto the pitch, climbing fences, invading the field, or lighting flares. CAF does not forgive such behavior, and JSK risks fines or matches behind closed doors.”
At the same time, the club encouraged fans to play their part in creating a vibrant and intimidating atmosphere. Supporters have been asked to wear yellow, the team’s traditional color, and to proudly wave the Amazigh flag throughout the match to energize the stands.
“We count on everyone to support the team from their arrival at the stadium until the final whistle. Avoid insults, encourage the players, and help create pressure on the opposition. Let’s make it a celebration,” the club concluded.
Despite the tough group and recent setbacks, JS Kabylie hope that unity between players and supporters can help them overcome the odds and launch their African campaign on the right foot.
