Geoffrey Kondogbia’s future at Olympique de Marseille remains uncertain as rumours swirl regarding a potential summer departure, despite the midfielder being under contract until 2027.
The Central African Republic captain, who joined the Ligue 1 side in 2023, has reportedly left the door open to a transfer, sparking reactions from those close to him—including national team record-holder Foxi Kethevoama.
Kondogbia, 32, has featured prominently for Marseille this season, making 25 appearances in Ligue 1 and one in the Coupe de France, often deployed in an unorthodox central defensive role.
Though traditionally a defensive midfielder, the former RC Lens, Monaco, Inter Milan, and Atlético Madrid player has adapted under head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who has publicly expressed a desire for the player to extend his stay at the Stade Vélodrome.
Speaking to Africafoot, Kethevoama, who played alongside Kondogbia for the Central African Republic and is regarded as one of the nation’s most experienced internationals, expressed surprise at the recent speculation.
“Like everyone else, I was surprised to hear talk of Geoffrey potentially leaving Marseille this summer,” he said. “Especially when the coach seems pleased with him and has even called for his contract to be extended.”
The Phocéens will close their Ligue 1 campaign against Rennes at the Stade Vélodrome, a match that could mark Kondogbia’s final appearance in the club’s colours.
Despite being contracted until June 30, 2027, and earning a monthly net salary of €450,000, the veteran midfielder has hinted at considering a move in the upcoming transfer window.
Kethevoama, now 38 and retired from international duty, spoke highly of his former teammate’s adaptability and performances this season.
“He had a good season,” Kethevoama remarked. “Playing out of position in central defence, he still showed what he’s capable of—his passing range, his ability to progress the ball, and his reading of the game were all evident.”
While Marseille have yet to issue any official comment regarding the speculation, the club has been urged by their coach to keep the experienced player, citing his tactical importance and leadership.
Kethevoama, however, believes the decision may also be influenced by Kondogbia’s limited time in his preferred role.
“I don’t know why leaving is even being discussed,” he said. “If it’s because he hasn’t played much in midfield, or because he’s had interest from other clubs, only Geoffrey can say.
But from my perspective, staying at Marseille—especially with Champions League football on the horizon—would be the right move. His experience would be a huge asset.”
Kondogbia’s market value is currently estimated at €8 million, a figure that could attract interest from other European clubs. Kethevoama sees several potential paths should a transfer materialise.
“If he does leave and gets the club’s green light, I see two clear routes: either stay in Europe, in a top league he knows well, like Italy or Spain, or try something new on another continent,” he suggested.
Saudi Arabia has emerged as one potential destination, given the recent influx of high-profile players to the Gulf state. Kethevoama acknowledged that the financial appeal of such a move might be a factor.
“That’s certainly a possibility,” he said. “A lot of top players have moved there in the last two years. It could be an opportunity for Geoffrey to sign one last big contract with a competitive team.”
Despite the uncertainty, Kethevoama remains convinced that Kondogbia, who has recovered from a calf injury earlier in the season, is still highly motivated and physically prepared for elite competition.
“Geoffrey is a competitor. He’s not finished—far from it. I’m sure he’ll have discussions with the club soon. Personally, I’d love to see him stay at Marseille for at least one more season.”
