Celtic sign Egypt international Haytham Hassan from Real Oviedo on four-year deal

Celtic have announced the signing of Egypt international Haytham Hassan from Spanish club Real Oviedo on a contract running until the summer of 2030.

The Scottish club are reported to have agreed an initial fee of £6m for the 23-year-old, with a further £3m potentially payable in bonuses, according to Sky.

A significant proportion of those additional payments would be triggered if Celtic qualify for the Champions League group stage later this month.

Celtic are hoping to register Hassan in time for next Wednesday’s Champions League play-off first-leg meeting with Austrian side LASK. The winner of that tie will qualify for the main phase of European football’s leading club competition.

Hassan’s arrival comes as Celtic sit top of the Scottish league after two matches of the new season, having collected six points.

He joins Celtic after helping Real Oviedo win promotion to Spain’s top flight. However, the club returned to the second tier after one season in La Liga.

Hassan made 38 appearances for Real Oviedo last season, providing three assists but failing to score.

He was also involved with Egypt at the 2026 World Cup, making two appearances. Hassan created a goal in the match against Argentina and contributed to another outstanding attacking move, although that goal was ruled out after a review by the video assistant referee.

Celtic confirmed the transfer on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, completing a move that had previously been reported as being close to agreement.

The structure of the deal means Celtic’s Champions League campaign could have a direct effect on the final cost of the transfer. While the initial payment is understood to be £6m, around half of the possible add-ons are linked to the club reaching the Champions League group stage later this month.

The immediate focus will be on ensuring Hassan is available for the first leg against LASK. Celtic’s progress in that tie would secure a place in the main phase of the Champions League, while elimination would prevent the club from reaching that stage.

Hassan now moves to Scotland after a season in which Real Oviedo’s stay in the Spanish top division lasted only one campaign. His contribution during that period included three assists from 38 appearances, although he did not find the net.

His international experience includes two matches at the 2026 World Cup with Egypt. Against Argentina, he set up one goal and was involved in another that was later cancelled following a VAR review.

Celtic have started the Scottish season with maximum points from their opening two matches and will now aim to combine that domestic form with a successful Champions League qualifying campaign.
