Haitham Hassan on the radar of Celtic

Scottish champions Celtic are reportedly interested in signing Egypt winger Haitham Hassan following his eye-catching displays at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Hassan emerged as one of Egypt’s standout performers during the tournament, attracting widespread praise for his creativity, pace and attacking threat, particularly in the Pharaohs’ dramatic round-of-16 clash against Argentina.

Egypt’s World Cup journey came to an end after a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to the reigning champions, despite taking a two-goal lead during the contest. Hassan played a key role in the match, contributing to Egypt’s second goal before Argentina staged a remarkable comeback to book their place in the quarter-finals.

According to the Daily Record, Celtic are closely monitoring the 23-year-old as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

The report claims that Hassan’s release clause has been reduced from £16 million to £10 million, making him a more affordable target for interested clubs this summer.

Described as an energetic and highly skilful winger, Hassan has attracted interest from several clubs following his performances for both club and country, with Celtic among the teams considering a move.

The report also states that Spanish side Real Oviedo are now prepared to sanction the Egyptian international’s departure for a lower fee, while clubs in the Saudi Pro League are also monitoring his situation.

Although the release clause currently stands at £10 million, the report suggests a transfer could be completed for a fee of around £4 million, with interested clubs aware that Spanish teams often insert high release clauses that do not necessarily reflect the player’s actual market value.

Celtic are believed to view Hassan as a player capable of adding pace, flair and creativity to their attacking options as they prepare for domestic and European competition next season.

The winger enhanced his reputation at the World Cup after producing several impressive performances for Egypt, with his display against Argentina drawing particular attention from scouts across Europe.

Hassan was instrumental in helping the Pharaohs establish a two-goal advantage against the defending world champions before the South Americans mounted a second-half comeback in a match overshadowed by controversial refereeing decisions.

At club level, Hassan is expected to remain with Real Oviedo unless a suitable offer arrives during the current transfer window.

The reduction in his release clause follows changes to the terms of his contract, making him a more attainable target than he was last season.

Any transfer, however, would also benefit Villarreal, with the Spanish club reportedly entitled to 40 percent of any future transfer fee received by Oviedo.

Hassan featured in 37 matches for Real Oviedo last season, registering three assists, and his impressive World Cup performances are now expected to increase interest in his signature ahead of the new campaign.
