Celta Vigo pitch fungal outbreak puts La Liga opener at risk

La Liga officials are due to inspect Celta Vigo’s Balaidos stadium after a fungal outbreak damaged the playing surface, raising doubts over whether the club’s opening fixture of the 2026-27 season can go ahead as planned.

The Spanish top-flight season begins on Saturday, with Celta Vigo scheduled to host Osasuna at 22:30 local time on Sunday at Balaidos.

BBC Sport reports that La Liga will assess the condition of the pitch in the coming hours before deciding whether the match can be staged as scheduled.

“The league will assess whether it is possible for the match to be held as scheduled or not,” BBC said.

Celta Vigo have asked for the fixture to be postponed, while Osasuna have indicated they would be open to playing at the originally scheduled time.

The stadium, which can currently accommodate about 25,000 spectators, is undergoing renovation work. Balaidos is expected to be one of 11 Spanish venues used when Spain hosts the 2030 World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco.

Once the redevelopment is completed, the stadium’s capacity is expected to rise to more than 40,000.

The pitch problem adds uncertainty to a fixture that was already being considered in the context of international commitments. Celta Vigo could have requested a postponement because their player Borja Iglesias was involved with Spain at the World Cup, but the club did not make such a request.

Spain played a friendly against Iraq in June before taking part in the World Cup.

Three other La Liga matches originally scheduled for the opening weekend have already been postponed because players from the clubs involved were participating in the World Cup final. Those fixtures are Valencia against Real Betis, Real Madrid against Real Sociedad and Barcelona against Athletic Club.

Spain won the World Cup for the second time in their history by beating Argentina 1-0 in the final.

The inspection of Balaidos will determine whether the damaged surface is considered suitable for top-flight football. If it is not, La Liga and the clubs will have to decide whether the game can be moved to a later date, although no alternative arrangement has yet been given.

Celta Vigo’s home ground is being modernised as part of wider preparations for the 2030 tournament. The planned expansion is intended to transform the stadium into a venue capable of welcoming more than 40,000 supporters, while its present capacity remains close to 25,000.

The proposed La Liga inspection comes just days before the new campaign is due to begin, leaving the league, Celta Vigo and Osasuna waiting for a final decision on the opening match.
