The Council for East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) has firmly thrown its weight behind Djibouti FA President Hassan Waberi Souleiman for a spot on the FIFA Council.
During CECAFA’s General Assembly held in Juba, South Sudan, unanimous support was declared for Waberi, who also serves as CECAFA’s vice president.
Ethiopian Football Federation President Isayas Jira Bosho emphasized the sub-confederation’s unity in supporting Waberi’s candidacy.
“Mr. Waberi is the sole candidate for the CECAFA region. He has all our backing to secure the FIFA Council seat,” Bosho stated during his address.
CECAFA President Wallace Karia echoed these sentiments, confirming the bloc’s collective commitment to Waberi’s campaign.
Somali Football Federation president Ali Abdi Mohamed also lauded Waberi’s contributions as CAF vice president, reinforcing Cecafa’s united front.
“We are throwing all of our support behind Mr. Waberi,” he declared.
While politics dominated discussions, the assembly also approved ambitious football development programs for 2025.
The CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup is set to return after a five-year hiatus, with the host nation yet to be named.
Other highlights include the Kagame Club Cup in Tanzania, a regional beach soccer tournament debuting in Kenya, and expanded women’s and youth tournaments.
CECAFA’s proactive approach promises a vibrant year ahead for football in the region.
